My family has a Cook Off (think Iron Chef) every year. The winner from the year before, chooses the theme or idea for the next year. It can be a little competitive at times, so if I enter a contest, or a competition, I go for broke with a winning attitude. This year, I did not even get an honorable mention. I have never come first, but every year I work hard and think I have just the dish to win (and I will someday)!
The funny thing is, it doesn’t really bother me. At the outset, I am going crazy with ideas and so are the others. If you saw the kitchen ten minutes before judging it is chaos, and every team is trying to win. It is not really about placing first, its about the process and being involved. I learn more about cooking every year, I have fun with family, and at the end of the night, we all have an excellent meal that was the result of everyone’s best, so really how can you loose?
Okay, so what does this have to do with, The year to Start? I am by no means a master chef, but I am learning, getting better in trying my best. I don’t always win, but I still see a reward at the end of my effort. If there is something that is a challenge for you, take it on. You may not get it the first time up, (or you may surprise your self too!) but I sure have a great idea for next year’s cook off… So take on a new challenge in 2011. You can be proud of yourself for doing your best, since doing your best creates winners!
